Around a couple of years ago, the news channel space looked overcrowded with more than 30 channels beaming into Indian cable and satellite TV homes. But that did not deter media owners, and it does not even today. News channels continued to launch in 2008 and also in 2009, even as there were some shutdowns and mergers and acquisitions. Today there are more than 40 news channels competing with each other in English and Hindi alone, with many more in the pipeline. There are another 40-50 news channels in other languages, with Andhra Pradesh being one of the most competitive. Additionally, almost another 90 licenses have been issued.
